COW DAY

Hello Gang!

Today was another fun filled day.  A new announcement.  For any of you who received a JB or NY on your COW from last week, you MUST revise that COW and hand in on Friday so it is a MEETING.

In case any of you lost the cow, with the rubric  here is the link:

Today the 6ers took their quizzes over again, talked about what it means to have a sustainable school (let's hope your question gets picked for the town hall meeting) and reviewed the qualifications for the COW

7ers also talked about sustainability, had some time to make corrections to the Ecosystems quiz and spent some time in the computer lab.

Tomorrow get ready for a great day in MST!

Holiday wreaths and the two week countdown!

Hello my wonderful darlings!

Two more weeks until holiday break and we are going strong!  Yesterday we got back into the swing of things with a math heavy day in both classes!

6ers: We went over your assessments from Friday on prime and composite numbers and on the layers of the earth and lithospheric plates.  Today you will have a chance to bump up your grade by indicating WHY your answer was incorrect and an explanation for the correct answer.

We also played a math factor and multiple game. REMEMBER a factor is any number that can be evenly divided into another number:  Example: the factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6 and 12.

A MULTIPLE on the other hand is any number multiplied by that number.  For example a multiple of 12 is 144, 36, 48, and 12.  (hint: you multiply 12 by some number to get the answer)

Today's agenda is:
1. Correct assessments, pass COWs back, finish the math game and some time in the computer lab

7ers
Yesterday we also went over our assessments with the same expectation as the 6ers.  Today you are going to correct your assessments so you can get closer to meeting the standard!
We then split up into groups to review standards that we missed, dealing with addition and subtraction of integers, algebraic expressions and absolute value.

IXL KNOWLEDGE HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEk.

6ers:
1. L.1, L.2, L.3, L.5

7ers:
G.7, G.11

For the COW -- ANYONE who received a Just Beginning or Not yet in any area must use this week to revise and hand in your cow again so that ALL parts of the rubric meet the standard.  Otherwise you cannot move on to the next problem.

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Welcome back!

Hello 6ers and 7ers -- we are back after a wonderful holiday break with lots to do before we leave again for our second holiday break!!!

COW for the week.

6ers Knowledge is the following on IXL: N.2, N.3, N.4

7ers Knowledge for the week is the following on IXL: D.3, D.5, E.2

Your COW R and C for the week is an Eliminating Possibilities problem. Click below for the problem - disregard the second page, as it is the knowledge homework for the 8ers.
COW R and C

7ers: Yesterday we acquainted ourselves with Symbiotic relationships.  We looked at how two organisms can have positive, negative, or neutral relationships with another organism in its environment.  You learned words such as parasitism, mutualism, commensalism, and predation.  Today we will look further at more relationships and then move on to how scientists classify all of these organisms!

6ers: Today we looked at candy bars and plate tectonics.  It was a great day to understand how plate tectonics can contribute to the theory of continental drift! Today we are going to move further into this topic as you each get your very own plate!!!!

2. You can put more than one characteristic on your playing cards.
3. General adaptations do not have to be different from specific adaptations
4. All the knowledge requirements from the rubric MUST BE ON YOUR QUILT OR BOARD GAME.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

GMAT question of the week.

Working together, Jose and Jane can complete an assigned task in 20 days. However, if Jose worked alone and complete half the work and then Jane takes over the task and completes the second half of the task, the task will be completed in 45 days. How long will Jose take to complete the task if he worked alone? Assume that Jane is more efficient than Jose.

  1. 25 days
  2. 30 days
  3. 60 days
  4. 65 days
  5. 36 days

Welcome back Wednesday!

THE MUCH ANTICIPATED GMAT QUESTION OF THE WEEK!

During the past week, a local medical clinic tested N individuals for two infections. If 1/3 of those tested had infection A and, of those with infection A, 1/5 also had infection B, how many individuals did not have both infection A and B?

Thursday!

7ers
1. More work with direct proportion.

Remember k is the magic number - it is our constant.  It is the 'per anything' so basically you can use to it to figure out how much total you need for any direct proportion scenario.

- To check for direct proportion cross multiple two points
- All graphs of direct proportion must pass through the origin (0,0) - Way to remember that Rivers!

2. We quickly colored in the maps of our biomes - I promise we'll work more tomorrow!

6ers
1. Finished the assessment
2. Stem and leaf plot practice

Check your family and/or Tuesday's blog for more stem and leaf plot practice

1. Celsius to Fahrenheit

(Celsius x 2) + 32 = F (Ballpark)

C X 9 /5 + 32

  1. F → C
(F/2) – 32 = C (ballpark)

(F – 32) X 5 / 9 = C

2. Spongebob activity - determining independent and dependent variable
Remember ! Independent variable is what you are in control of - what do you want to test?
Dependent variable DEPENDS on the independent variable.  It is the result you are testing or looking for.

- Can the monkeys run all over the place?

** Use those questions when trying to determine RELATIONSHIPS to see what things are linked or related.**

More OIL!

First I want to give a shoutout to Cornelius for completing the Mean, Median Mode activity on the website!

My 7ers continued working on their oil spill projects and most of us are on the Graph Lookup and/final draft.   Tomorrow you should start the period finishing your counter argument, finding a graph and finalizing the aspects of your rough draft to make your dun.dun.dun. FINAL DRAFT!

6ers...yesterday we spent a lot of time on de-fogging out minds about mean, median, mode and range from line plots.  I was so impressed by your interest and your eagerness to learn! You demanded to know what outlier meant!  Today we also continued working on our projects.  When you get to class tomorrow make sure you have your argument and counter argument finished.

REMINDER: COW IS DUE TOMORROW.

7th grade you MUST add interquartile range and box and whisker plot on a SEPARATE sheet of paper!

ps. if you read the blog tonight post your favorite ice cream.  I want to know how many of you read my blog, it will earn you a pickle!

NEW COW! Explanations and Project Overview

Ok team,

It's been a while since my last posting.

Yesterday I handed back your COW2s with LOTS of questions. I hope I answered them all. Remember COWS are graded on the rubric which you pasted into your COW notebook. Email me with any questions you have. If you lose the COW click here for a copy and challenge your family!!!! See who can solve the problem in the fewest number of trips!

6ers! I have clarification on the homework. I misinformed you about the line plot. You will actually put the calorie count amount on the X axis and use X's to show the frequency of each calorie count on the Y axis. Call me tonight with any questions. You can call me!

Today we continued our Mad minutes (many people improved from yesterday) and tomorrow we are going to start our Oil Spill Projects.

Ciao ninos!

What Do you Know and COW

Hello my darlings! Today was a manic Monday as I noticed lots of us were very vibrant this morning. Today was a little all over the place because we were trying to organize ourselves, our minds, our classroom and our homework.

Today we introduced the COW, applied for class roles, took the 'WHAT DO YOU KNOW' assessment and organized our notebook(family)

A couple of things to remember.

BOTH CLASSES SEE HERE
1. COW 1 (flashlight problem) is to be done on a separate piece of paper.
2. COWS can be done each night, or you can finish them all at once (it's up to you)
3. I will check the COW every day for completion, you will be required to stay inside for lunch and recess if your COW is not complete

FOR AN EXTRA COPY OF THE COW CLICK HERE
6C
1. Make t chart for givens, constraints, and goal
2. Complete the multiplication problem on a SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER

7C
1. Make a t chart for givens, constraints and goal on a notebook paper (but not from the family!)
2. IN YOUR MST NOTEBOOK -- define mean median mode range and outlier.

THANK YOU!
Have a great night!

Happy Friday!

(Below are some pictures from the 7C poster making process)

After a VERY successful first week I want to say I am thoroughly impressed by your dedication and rigor in the classroom!

Today we finished our Michael Jackson activities and had some great thinkers and questioners in the 6th grade class! We were all discussing the differences between
quantitative and qualitative data and even Ms. Dickie and I were unsure on some of them!

6C Homework: Finish the persuasive paragraph on the back of your chart. It MUST have at least two pieces of quantitative and TWO pieces of qualitative evidence to support your claim.

7C you did a wonderful job making posters to support your presentations for Monday. We had some very unique ideas!

Expectations for Monday for BOTH classes:
1. Binder for classes
2. We will present your artist
3. We will take a 'WHAT DO YOU KNOW' mini assessment to see what you processed this week
4. WE WILL FINALLY ORGANIZE ourselves, I'll be taking applications for class roles and you will get your spiral notebook where we will keep vocabulary and notes.

**Asa, our Sparks will go on a Spark of the Week sheet that you will keep in your binder**

Today Ylaysia gave an All Star Pickle Jar to Coty, but she left early so I just want to give her a shout out!

**Zoe, I changed the settings, can you comment now?

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Michael Jackson is the best?!?!?!

Hello my wonderful darlings!

Today was another excellent day in our classroom! We finished our graphing labs from yesterday where we created survey questions for the class to turn qualitative feelings into quantitative data! When had some great questions!
We learned that more of us like vanilla ice cream, that not too many people walk to school, and that a lot of us have more than one sibling, including Ella who has four younger brothers!

The last half of the class period, we discussed using qualitative and quantitative pieces of information to support claims made. In other words, how to use evidence to support a claim. We each took on the role as a musical artist and located pieces of evidence that supported or negated our claim. 7th grade had to finish this for homework and write their argument (communication) using the data (reasoning) while the 6th grade will finish tomorrow.

Thanks to Asa for looking up our two new words on the "Life word wall" and I want to give a shout out to Coty for getting the first wolf bone from our class!!!!

Devon got an All star pickle jar from me while working with his group and trusting in the fact that they were a team.

You all did a great job! Remember binders are due tomorrow and 7th grade you must finish your paragraph and worksheets for tomorrow.

If you weren't here, click here for the graphic organizer and here for a list of a few artists we looked at.

Un abrazo,
Ms. Trivedi
