Wonderful Wednesday!

Agenda 7ers:

1. Completion of jumping jack lab. -- remember it is a quadruple line graph.
2. Answer analysis questions:

  1. How did your jumping jack rate (the number of jumping jacks per second) change as time passed? How is this shown in your table?

  2. What is the scale you are going to use for the x axis? The y-axis?

  3. What are the variables in this situation?

  4. What is the independent variable?

  5. What is the dependent variable?

  6. Make the appropriate graph to show your data for EACH person that did jumping jacks. How will you set this up?

  7. How do we make points on the graph to represent values of time and distance variables?

  8. What does your graph show about jumping jack rates as time passes?
  9. Is the relationship you found between the number of jumping jacks and time easier to see in the table or the graph? Explain your answer.

3. Create a table to observe your terraqua problem - on the top row we placed, 'soil, moss, radish and soil'

4. Vocabulary in our family:
1. ecosystem: a group of organisms that interact with each other and their environment
2. biome: a geographic area with similar climatic conditions --> interacting flora and fauna and abiotic factors
3. biotic - any living thing in an ecosystem (gazelle, plant, bacteria)
4. abiotic - non living factor in an ecosystem (rock, water, soil, wind)
5. population - group of the same organism living in the same area (herd of zebra)

Tomorrow we are going to look through BIOMES!

6ers

Agenda:
1. Review independent and dependent variable with Spongebob
2. Computer lab - make sure you are practicing MFIAF and IXL at home! (true for 7th also)
3. Layers of the earth and cross - section activity with Ms. Dickie!

TERRIFIC TUESDAY!

Agendas
6ers
1. Spark converting Celsius to Fahrenheit and vice versa

  1. density- how much something of a set volume weighs
    1. volume: amount of space something takes
  1. mass – the amount of matter in an object (different than weight) – grams, kilograms
    1. matter – physical substance that occupies the space,
  2. consecutive – back to back, following without interruption, one after another
  3. interval – distance/amount between points
  4. Celsius – temperature scale named after swedish astronomer (1701-1744), freezing point of water is 0 (32F), and boiling point is 100(232F).
  5. TEAM – FLIP TO YOUR NOTES SECTION NOW
Date: 9.28.10

Conversion of temperatures:
1. Celsius to Fahrenheit

(Celsius x 2) + 32 = F (Ballpark)

C X 9 /5 + 32

  1. F → C
(F/2) – 32 = C (ballpark)

(F – 32) X 5 / 9 = C

2. Spongebob activity - determining independent and dependent variable
Remember ! Independent variable is what you are in control of - what do you want to test?
Dependent variable DEPENDS on the independent variable.  It is the result you are testing or looking for.

7ers
1. Finish and exchange information for the Jumping Jack Lab - tomorrow we are going to graph our results!
2. Set up Terraqua bottles, tomorrow De'Eric please remind me to take pictures of them and post on the blog!

Tomorrow is tutorial! Come to the cafeteria!  See you then!

Cheers!

CLARIFICATION ON THE COW

Tonight -- for the givens and constraints Monday homework.  Those questions were to help you think of relationships.

In this case replace the questions about George with leading questions such as...

- Can the monkeys sit anywhere they want?
- Can more than one monkey eat a different fruit?
- Can the monkeys run all over the place?

** Use those questions when trying to determine RELATIONSHIPS to see what things are linked or related.**

New EVERYTHING! Cow! Gmat question and fun!

ABUNDANCE OF PAPER

Yesterday 6ers and 7ers had several assignments passed back to them.  We clarified the COW and we got a new problem this week. It's a logic problem.

1. Click here for the 6th grade COW
2. Click here for the 7th grade COW
3. CLICK HERE FOR THE Reasoning and communication COW for BOTH GRADES

Today we'll be starting our computer lab Math practice.  Every Tuesday and Thursday BOTH grades will spend 30 minutes in the computer lab increasing our math knowledge skills. This week we'll be working on the following:
1. 6ers: Bar graphs, mean, median and mode, line plots
2. 7ers: interpreting line plots, Box and whisker plots, stem and leaf plots and mean median and mode.

One thing you can do at home is PRACTICE Math facts in a flash and log on to IXL and practice any concepts we are covering in class, or just practice increasing your math fluency to increase your score for the next time we do a round of MMMMMMMAAAAD MINUTES!

If you need a refresher on how to log on to either IXL or Math facts in a flash refer to the side bar for directions and clues to your username and password.

Today we are going to have our debates (I promise!) and have a wonderful Tuesday!

Cheers!

More OIL!

First I want to give a shoutout to Cornelius for completing the Mean, Median Mode activity on the website!

My 7ers continued working on their oil spill projects and most of us are on the Graph Lookup and/final draft.   Tomorrow you should start the period finishing your counter argument, finding a graph and finalizing the aspects of your rough draft to make your dun.dun.dun. FINAL DRAFT!

6ers...yesterday we spent a lot of time on de-fogging out minds about mean, median, mode and range from line plots.  I was so impressed by your interest and your eagerness to learn! You demanded to know what outlier meant!  Today we also continued working on our projects.  When you get to class tomorrow make sure you have your argument and counter argument finished.

REMINDER: COW IS DUE TOMORROW.

7th grade you MUST add interquartile range and box and whisker plot on a SEPARATE sheet of paper!

ps. if you read the blog tonight post your favorite ice cream.  I want to know how many of you read my blog, it will earn you a pickle!

Oil Spill Project continued

Hi gang!

After three days off we jumped right into handing out a new COW and beginning our rough drafts for the oil spill project.

Remember 7ers, three paragraphs of your rough draft are due tomorrow, 6ers we'll continue working on our rough drafts.

Click here for the checklist in case you misplace it.   Keep in mind our Board hearing is Friday so all work should be done by Thursday!

I also wanted to thank Donald for bringing us a Hickory Horned Devil on Friday.  It was the largest caterpillar I've ever seen!
Thanks Donald!

As far as last week's COWS go, we'll look at them next week and each day we'll model what we expect from your nightly COWS for reasoning and communication.

Enjoy your evening and don't forget to do the COW for tonight.
